Decoupling local elections from federal elections would result in having local elected officials more in-tune with the wishes of the more active and involved local residents who have better insights into current local events.
Let’s face it – most voters are very informed on national-level politics, but local politics isn’t covered sufficiently by most media.
Voters must go out of their way to find in-depth information sources on local government and politics.
I propose that the City of Alexandria have two- or four-year terms for City Council and always have the voting for our local elections on odd-numbered years, when there are no Federal elections.
Let’s not let our local concerns get smothered by national politics.
Let’s decide that our local issues are important enough to deserve our special attention and discernment.
